The Hyphen Team
Mike Elam
Mike studied Three Dimensional Design at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication, graduating
in 1992. He worked for a few years in the model-making industry before joining the Tools for Living
team, headed by Professor Heinz Wolff (of Great Egg Race fame), at the Brunel Institute for Bioengineering.
There, he researched and designed life-changing enabling aids for people with special needs, continuing
after Tools for Living became the Design for Life Centre and moved to Brunel's Design Campus at Runnymede.
In 2001, he joined Hyphen as a senior designer, and in 2006 staged a management buyout with Cameron
Treeby.
Mike is the mechanical and engineering guru within the Hyphen team. He has a great feel for usability
and the physiological experiences of human–product interaction from his time at Brunel University.
